Fresh Madison Market to open its doors this Saturday in downtown Madison
Madison, WI – On Saturday, January 9 at 12:00 p.m., Madison’s newest, freshest supermarket will open its doors for business. Fresh Madison Market, at 703 University Avenue, is located in the University Square building on the corner of University Avenue and Lake Street on the UW campus. The store is hoping to fill a void in downtown by catering to university students and the downtown clientele. Its offerings, though, are expected to draw in customers from outside downtown as well.
“We’re so excited to be here and have our store finally open.” Fresh Madison Market owner Jeff Maurer said. “This is a concept I have been working on for a while and to see it come to fruition is a great achievement. We couldn’t have asked for a better location for our store. We’re proud to be a part of the downtown community! “
Fresh Madison Market has been a vision of Maurer’s for a while. With over 30 years of experience in the grocery store business, most recently as the president of the Pierce’s Markets chain, Maurer is operating his store on three guiding principles: sustainability, eating well and green living. Maurer is utilizing fresh, locally-grown product when available, believes that eating well begins in the marketplace by offering the freshest and highest quality foods available at a fair price, and walks the walk of “green” living. For example, he has installed top-of- the-line coolers saving the store 75-80% of normal cooler electricity costs. He also believes in giving back to the community and has already done so by donating a pallet of food items to the local food pantry.
The 18,000-square foot store employees over 70 people. It will offer on-the-go items, a bakery and deli department, sushi bar, an organic and gluten-free department, health and beauty aids, a meat counter loaded with locally grown, organic product, beer and wine department and a produce section stocked with fresh produce and vegetables. The store also employs an in-house chef who creates the recipes featured in the cold and hot deli and also for the catering business the store will have available. The store will also be incorporating on-line ordering and at-home delivery by the end of the month.
“I’m confident that any customer can find what they are looking for in our store. We have tried the best we can to incorporate items the student will find easy to purchase and eat as well as not forgetting about our other customer who wants quality, fresh products. And, we are offering it all at a fair and reasonable price.” Maurer said.
During the four-week grand opening period, the store will feature special pricing and in-store deals. Parking is available under the store in the heated parking garage. Scooter and bicycle parking is also available.
