Alice in Dairyland at FMM
Local & state products to be showcased during visit
Madison, WI – Since its January opening, Fresh Madison Market, 703 University Avenue in downtown Madison, has been filling its shelves with local and state grown products. To help showcase this inventory, Cheryl O’Brien, Wisconsin’s own Alice in Dairyland, will be at the store on Friday, April 16 from 3-6p. She will be talking about the importance of buying locally as well as handing out samples, registering people for giveaways and giving store tours.
O’Brien has been touring the state in the past months promoting her “Spend 10 in 2010” program. Wisconsin consumers now spend only 1% of their food budgets annually on Wisconsin grown products. The 62nd Alice in Dairyland wants to see that number grow to 10%.
My “Spend 10 in 2010” campaign has been all about making consumers aware of the variety of products that come from Wisconsin. Buying Wisconsin grown and produced items helps support our local farmers, producers, communities, economies, and all Wisconsin agriculture.” O’Brien said.
Fresh Madison Market is trying to help achieve this goal by stocking various departments with products made in Madison as well as around the state.
Some local offerings can be found in the bakery with twelve different donuts and sweet goods from Greenbush Bakery, a local kosher bakery on Regent St; coffee beans from Just Coffee, a local coffee roasted in Madison; and eight varieties of frozen bagels from Madison’s Bagels Forever. A new six-foot cheese case has also just been installed to showcase cheeses from vendors such as Bucky Badger, Carr Valley, Bel Gioioso, Burnett Dairy Coop, Crave Brothers and many others made in Wisconsin.
“Our decision to expand the inventory of Wisconsin made cheese and other products came from customer wants and suggestions, as well as from a desire to help support our local and state economy.” Maurer stated.
