Keeping Kids Safe on Sunny Days

June 17, 2018

As parents, we are torn between sending our kids outside to play in the sun…and keeping them safe from dangerous sunburns.  Without getting into all the little details about UVA and UVB, you simply need to know that too much direct sun exposure is damaging to young skin, and severe sunburns before the age of 20 is believed to be a contributor to skin cancer later in life.  But growing bodies do need sun.  It’s helps our bodies make vitamin D, and helps absorb calcium for strong bones.  Your kid’s best friend is going to be sunscreen.  Check the label for “broad-spectrum protection” that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.  Remember that the strongest rays of the day are between 10am and 4pm.  Even on overcast and cooler days, the sun’s rays can be harmful.  Cover up, especially babies, and wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection.  A little precaution will go a long way to enjoying a safe summer.
