In the News
January 31, 2012
Some of you may be hearing about chemicals the FDA has found in shipments of orange juice imported from outside of the United States. If not, we encourage you to read this article from ABC News:
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/fda-detains-oj-imports-finding-fungicide-15456788#.TyM2PQqXBWs.email
We find this extremely disturbing. We don’t think you should be worried about what is in your orange juice! Every morning at Fresh Madison Market, we squeeze cartons of oranges shipped to us from Florida or California to offer you fresh squeezed orange juice. Nothing else goes in our juice. We hope you will try it.

Posted by jillotooleThe Debut of the “Freshmobile”
November 17, 2011
On Thursday, November 17, Fresh Madison Market, in partnership with Meriter Health Services and Physicians Plus, will unveil plans for the “Freshmobile” at the Healthy Living Summit at the Monona Terrace. A mobile grocery store on wheels, the “Freshmobile” will be stocked with healthy food choices including fresh produce and other grocery items. It will travel throughout the Dane County area serving underprivileged neighborhoods that do not have access to fresh food or a supermarket within walking distance, also known as “food deserts.”
The inside of the 34 foot “Freshmobile” trailer will be set up like a mini grocery store. Shelves will be stocked with essential grocery fare including dairy and boxed grocery items and a huge selection of fresh fruits and vegetables – over 200 items in all. Equipped with refrigeration to maintain proper temperatures regardless of weather, the trailer will also have an on-board generator and its own water supply.
Bringing healthy food choices to lower income neighborhoods has been a goal of Fresh Madison Market’s store owner, Jeff Maurer, for some time. His work with the local Boys and Girls Club, as well as the Allied Neighborhood Association, highlighted the poor nutritional options in these neighborhoods. He saw kids coming into the club and devouring the fruit he would bring. He knew that he wanted to help offer more healthy nutritional choices to these kids and families.
In response, Maurer began taking steps to help these neighborhoods that are literally in a food desert. Earlier this year, the Public Health Madison and Dane County department recognized his efforts by awarding him with a public health award. The “Freshmobile” seemed like the next step in helping these neighborhoods gain access to healthy food alternatives.
“I am involved in various organizations that help low-income neighborhoods in and around Madison.” Maurer said. “The thing that really concerns me is that there are a lot of fast food choices in these areas but really none that offer fresh produce and vegetables. I want to change that with the Freshmobile and bring healthy choices to these communities in a convenient and affordable way.”
Maurer began to research the concept of the “Freshmobile” by studying similar initiatives in various U.S. cities. He also met with neighborhood leaders, the mayor’s office in Madison and leaders from the Dane County Executive office. He was pleased when his idea was met with their full support. He approached Meriter and Physicians Plus hoping for a partner on his endeavor and they, too, embraced the idea. Both organizations have a demonstrated history of addressing health needs in the community and recognize that access to healthy food choices is a barrier to health for many in our area.
Although Meriter and Physicians Plus have come on board as full-fledged partners, Maurer is hoping that more businesses will help support the “Freshmobile” through monetary donations. Because this part of the company is set up as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations and grants are still being sought to help the “Freshmobile” come to fruition.
“We are so thankful that Meriter and Physicians Plus saw the benefit of the Freshmobile and have chosen to partner with us. They have helped to get the ball rolling on this great initiative.” Maurer said. “However, we are still in need of many more businesses and individuals to come on board and help out. The people in these neighborhoods need healthy food options and I’m hoping we can come together as a community to bring those choices to them.”
If the necessary funding can be secured, the trailer will be on the road in late February, 2012. Plans are to take the trailer to a minimum of four locations per week with more to follow.
The Healthy Living Summit, facilitated by the YMCA, will be held on Thursday, November 17 at the Monona Terrace. The summit will bring together community leaders, health care professionals and area business leaders to discuss ideas to improve the lives of people in Dane County.
Posted by jillotooleThe Construction Continues…
October 28, 2011
The construction on our new “event room” on the second floor continues. This week, all of the metal studs were put up defining each room. Drywall on the outside of the room is complete and doorways into the space have been framed out. Inside, the frame of the office, kitchen and event room, are taking shape. We are in the process of ordering the blinds for the windows as well as the other furnishings that will make up the room. We are still on track for an early December opening. Check out the pictures of the room as it looks today.
This Friday, we will be at Kids Day at the Kohl Center. Bring the kids to our booth and have them decorate their own cupcake! We’ll also be handing out animal balloons! Come on down…it’s from 12-2 and sure to be a good time!
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
